Notes

Correct printing with year zero text on disc. Not to be confused with the miss-print edition which is missing the year zero text on the disc which is the only difference between the two.

6- Digipak with transparent tray, sleeve for booklet, 24 page booklet, back one page insert with tracklisting and black hype sticker with white font.
The CD face is thermo-chrome heat-sensitive CD face. Appearing mostly black (except for the title), when heated the disc turns mostly white, hiding the title and revealing lines, blocks, the copyright notice and a series of zeros and ones.

Is there some reason there's not a page for the multitrack release of this album? Pretty sure that was released legitimately online; not some algorithmically generated sh**. That's why at least one of the songs has 18 tracks for all the different instruments and sounds. Anyway, seems pretty noteworthy because as I noticed from DR Database https://dr.loudness-war.info/ this multitrack version of the album, when rendered with reduced gain (to bring the loudest peaks down to 0db) has the most dynamic range, at DR12; or at least that's the most dynamic version reported there; more dynamic than the vinyl report there (dr10). I just spent several tedious hours rendering the multitracks myself lolol. I actually got a very slightly higher reading than the one at DRdb, with "Vessel" reading dr14....worth it? lol...Well, probably worth it either way, because they sound pretty fire thus far. Haven't had a dedicated listen yet, but it seems like about the best version of the album if you like dynamics, unless I'm missing anything.

Also, I love this album. The Fragile is my favorite; Downward Spiral is probably #2, and then honestly Year Zero, Hesitation, and PHM might be tied for 3rd. Suffice to say, I've got a lot of respect for Reznor in that, in my opinion, he's done a pretty remarkable job at continuing to pump out quality songwriting after all these years. I've got my favorites, but there's not a single NIN album that strikes me as 'his heart's not in it' 'he's uninspired' 'he's ran out of ideas'....etc. Nope, it's always at least something interesting, if not bangin'

After having listened to the Definite Edition Vinyl-Reissues from the past years I couldn‘t be more excited for what we might expect this album will sound like...to me it has a much more ambient veneer than the With Teeth and is much more dynamic via Headphones/Spotify. Couldn‘t be more excited for a reissue...that probably arrives in 2-3 years or so ;-)

Soundwise -> Brilliant --in all aspects of the word [from Engineering to the Musicianship} and NIN pretty much stayed away from the Doom and Gloom Goth Vocals but kept the sSpirit of Doom and Gloom Goth Lyrics Pretty MUch Electronica/Goth/Industrial....Much in Vain With the Styles of Sound/Music from "GHOSTS I-IV and "WITH TEETH".

Something must be out of alignment cosmically, we have a new NIN album in under five years. This is an unprecedented period of creativity for Trent Reznor; I really question the wisdom of such productivity as a lot of these new tracks sound pretty unfinished. I'm all for rough and ready tunes but they are better served if they've been fleshed out at least a little bit. "Year Zero" sounds very rushed. A continuation of "With Teeth" yet without the focused attention to detail which compelled me to buy the damn thing as soon as I could. There is no straight to the jugular follow-up to "The Hand That Feeds" unfortunately.

It's been noted by Mr. Reznor that this album began as a series of laptop sketches and I'll say that some of them work very well: "Vessel", "My Violent Heart" and the lovely "In This Twilight" are the first ones which come to mind. Yet, for all the and screaming, "Year Zero" loses momentum several times throughout its sixty plus minute run. Where are the epic instrumentals that made me love "The Fragile" so much? For the most part, "Year Zero" is comprised of under five minute tracks that certainly are intended to flow together but in the final analysis sound disted and desperately unconventional.

"Survivalism", the lead single has all the classic touches IE: choppy synths, heavily processed guitar bits and breathy almost spoken vocals, but I'm sorry Trent, I've heard you do this sort of thing several times before. "Me, I'm Not" contains minimal instrumentation, narcissistic lyrics and the typical breakdown chorus we've been accustomed to since the chart-topping live favorite "Closer" way way back in 1994.

The more I listen to this thing, the more it becomes apparent that NIN are in serious danger of becoming a parody of themselves. I cannot take this album seriously no matter how hard I try and the whole story-line concept leaves me cold. Why oh why did Reznor not spend more time honing this album? Given another year or two in the studio, "Year Zero" could have slowly developed into a magnificent piece of work but it appears he's more interested in keeping the NIN name in the public eye rather than offering up something of true vision. Of course, the die-hard fan won't give a damn about any of this, which is the true tragedy of it all.
