Edited 4 years agoRecorded soon after the band's breakthrough into the mainstream, 'Conspiracy Of One' picks up where 'Americana' left off with tight riffs, high octane vocals and cheeky subject matter that was an instant hit for the younger fans looking to loose themselves in a mass of Pop Punk that was still going strong as the new century blossomed.
Starting out with an intro taken from a Beach Boys live album, the album wastes no time in giving us indication that The Offspring are not slowing down with the live favourite 'Come Out Swinging', followed by a pseudo sequel to 'Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)' with 'Original Prankster' - an ode to those who like to cause chaos (all be it with an odd cameo by Hip-Hop artist Redman). The three singles from the album are stacked together with 'Want You Bad' being an anthemic attempt detailing a guy's longing for the girl he likes to be a little more daring followed by 'Million Miles Away', which is beloved by the fans with it's chunky riffs and talk of dissociation (something that is a common theme in 'Conspiracy Of One').
The vast majority of the release contains unforgettable tunes, including the revenge laden 'Special Delivery', the catchy & dangerous 'Dammit I Changed Again' and the torturous break up song 'Denial, Revisited', proving that the band still had potential to delve into deeper subject matters with grace. Top deep cuts that could have easily been released as a single include the sliding ode to perseverance 'Living In Chaos' and the hooliganistic 'One Fine Day' - a track that comes across as a sequel to the previous album's 'Walla Walla'.
With this being the last release to feature the band's original drummer Ron Welty it almost seems like it comes across as a line in the sand for The Offspring - the end of a chapter that would see them fade from relevance as they were replaced by newer alt. genres, but on it's own 'Conspiracy Of One' stands tall as one of the greatest records at the time. Creative, addictive and tight as hell it's a perfect way to loose yourself in 00's nostalgia.
