Eastman was a brilliant and unique composer, one whose work has really blown me away and given me new insight, and fans of this box set who find him intriguing should check out the interview he did with David Garland for Spinning On Air, a college radio classical show apparently). The interview is available in its entirety online,
It's around a half-hour long, and Garland is an affable chap who keeps his input minimal and sympathetic. Although Eastman's life was in a bit of a state at the time (he describes his lack of posession making his compositions "by neccessity, rather thin"), his brilliance shines through. It's a bit bloody sad, at times, but he's cool and funny and there's also a beautiful vocal performance at the end.
Also check out Wild Out's rendition of Stay On It and the gorgeous version of Femenine by Apartment House. Far from a flash-in-the-pan, Eastman is a fascinating composer whose scores have untapped depths and potential that transcends his archive material, brilliant as it is. -
I'm not saying anything new here, but if there's one release you should own by J.Eastman, this should be it//
