Edited 3 months agoI've been blessed with plenty of pressings of this gem over 50 years of collecting jazz, from cheap to the abfab original US copy. Sacrifices and choices had to be made at one point and from now on, music prevails over collector's items. This mastering conveys the essential depth, groove and beauty of an extraordinary recording session. A reissue of outstanding quality.

Fantastic mastering, pressing and packaging all the way around. You can tell that this landmark album was treated with reverence throughout the process. My 1976 green bullseye reissue sounds great and this is somehow even better. Free of surface noise and defects. Great listening copy.

Just picked up a copy of this. It's one of my favorite albums so I'm torn on eventually shelling out for the UHQR version. This release sounds incredible.

I purchased this record based on many of the reviews here. I was hoping to sell my (VG+) Canadian mono pressing Johnny Griffin - The Little Giant (1959) .The copy of Ballads I received was perfect with no issues except for the way the musical presentation comes across. I will be putting this copy up for sale on Discogs and avoiding the UHQR at all cost.

My pressing is nearly perfect. This is a quiet album, so a noiseless disc is essential. I think in total, I might have heard 5 super-light clicks. This pressing gets a 6 out of 5 from me.
The recording is very good, and Coltrane's sax sounds very good, with just a little distortion here and there. The drums play at a quiet level, but sound realistic and correct. The piano is that typical Rudy Van Gelder soft piano, but pleasant nonetheless. I'd probably give the recording a 4.5 out of 5.

“fantastic” and “exceptional” are not the words, “perfect” is the word. hard cardboard packaging, anti static inner sleeve, and some of the most spectacular audio quality i’ve ever heard come from a vinyl record. i’m not sure just how they nailed this release on the head so well. if anyone can direct me to more pressings like this, please let me know.
