As noted, the US release has a car sample removed, which is harmless enough on CD. It'd be more important on vinyl though, with side B opening with the car starting again, making the side flip a thematic pit stop.
Only problem with my theory is that the sample is that the end of Side A on the UK vinyl. Doh. -
..oh, how I listening to this on my small portable CD system almost every night in 1991/1992.. I'm amazed that the CD has survived. I bought it at a "normal shopping centre" where they had about 12 - 15 LPs of the US Chill Out album and only two or three of the US CD, so I somehow went for the CD, as it was ambient, and, it was more convenient for me with CDs at that point in time.. This album is just pure Magic. This and the Space album.... 5/5 any day of the week ever since (never saw Space in any shop in Sweden, though :)

Compared to the original UK CD, this US CD has the following minor edit:
• side 2: omits Dodge van startup sample (should be by itself at beginning of track 08)
This CD also has the following minor mastering differences vs. the UK CD:
• mastered as 14 tracks (the UK release is mastered as one track)
• phase is inverted (harmless)
• subsonic rumble (under 3 Hz) is greatly reduced (harmless, arguably helpful)
• ultrasonic noise is further reduced (20.5 kHz cutoff, vs 21.5 kHz on UK CD) (harmless)
• right channel is delayed by one sample (harmless; common on old digital transfers)
• an average of 1 sample was dropped approximately every 1.1 s (harmless; 0.02 ms change overall)
• side 1 (tracks 01–07) has many transfer errors, creating high-frequency clicks & dropouts (mostly inaudible)
• side 1 (tracks 01–07) is mastered a few dB quieter than the UK CD (mostly harmless)
• side 1: omits about 1.8s from fade-in on first side (beginning of track 01 is more abrupt than it should be)
• side 1: omits about 0.2s from fade-out on first side (end of track 07 is more abrupt than it should be)
• side 2: includes 0.5s of fade-in which was missing from the UK CD (beginning of track 08—an improvement!)
• side 2: fades out about 2.9s early (end of track 14)

A nocturnal road trip around the States.
As it was recorded "live" in one take, there's a clear sense of improvisation and occasional imperfections in sample and loop layering, but it takes nothing away from the exquisiteness of the sonic voyage; on the contrary.
I just wish it was a bit longer; 44 minutes fly by.
-
N.b.: The US CD version (or at least the PDO pressing of the US version) is ~20s shorter than the original UK CD due to omission of the "Dodge Van Starts, Drives Out" sample at the start of "3AM Somewhere Out Of Beaumont".

Edited 20 years agoRecorded in one take at Trancentral in 1990, this album is a mixture of samples and new age/experimental contemporary music. Many elements from "Chill Out" were sampled from previous releases of The KLF, and then re-used again in the making of "The White Room" (their most popular opus). So you do recognize bits from "3 AM Eternal", "Last Train To Trancentral" and "Justified and Ancient" throughout this musical road trip.
My favorite moments on this CD are "Wichita Lineman..." and "Trancentral Lost In My Mind", later released in part as the "Pure Trance Original" mix of "Last Train To Trancentral". The sampled voices of a preacher and a radio host are melt together in a strong melodic segment.
"Elvis On The Radio..." samples a song from Elvis Presley, way back before Junkie XL with "A Little Less Conversation". Amazing "Hawaian" result! Hear for yourself!
Interesting and very moody; I recommend to everybody. Lie down, close your eyes, relax: Chill out.
