Edited 5 years agoProbably the least expensive way to acquire the original mix of the album on CD, and this version still holds up surprisingly well against later masterings with better A/D converter technology despite what people might tell you. My copy is this early Japan for U.S. pressing but IIRC the U.S. for U.S. copies that were pressed a little later (but prior to the '96 remix) have the same mastering. Not sure who actually did the mastering on this disc. The booklets credit Acosta @ TML, which is the same guy that cut the vinyl in 1973. That said I wonder if that was simply copied over for the CD credits or if this disc used his EQ'd LP cutting tape as a source. No matter, the sound is quite good, even up against the 2013 SHM-CD mastering or the HDTracks Super Deluxe Edition.
Update: according to someone that worked at MCA during the 80s, the Acosta credit on this CD is wrong. It was erroneously copied over from the LP credits. The person that mastered this CD edition was Doug Schwartz.
