This is minimal and experimental ambient (no dark stuff) so certainly not to everyone's taste. However, the overall atmosphere is dreamy and very soothing, a.o. thanks to the Frippertronics. Since the music was made for an art installation and not for "stand-alone" listening, it is most effective as a background for relaxing or sleeping. I found reading or working impossible because there still is too much going on in the way of sounds/noises, loops, samples, etc.

Edited 13 years agoPros and cons on Approaching silence:
I buy every possibile releases of my beloved CDs in order to find the best captured/digitalised/mastered/manufactured version and so did I to this one. The difference was shocking:
1- The Japanese Virgin release was disappointing as ever. From bit-to bit same digital material in a VERY badly manufactured glass-mastered disc. The result is more dull and flat real-time playback soundquality compared to the EU-releases. I've loaded both to RAM memory and there was no difference there, so the difference comes from the high-speed writing of the factory glass-master disc. VERY BAD approaching.
2- The US-Shakti version is a totally different in mastering: while the others are recorded onto tape and digitalised back from the tape while mastering, this release stays in the digital domain and sounds MUCH MORE precise, detailed and more exciting. I haven't got all the releases but if you want it, I think only the Shakti version comes in question. The difference makes me sick. How amatheur a mastering engineer can be???
3- The latter, Shakti-version differs a bit in in the musical-content. Well, apart from the MUCH more precise soundquality, the speech on the 3rd track is more audible. It's partially remixed before mastering. Well, I don't think there's any further difference musicalwise but maybe. I've only auditioned the speech. How If you have doubts about the Venture-Virgin vs Shakti version: buy both and you don't have to listen sharp to throw away the other but the Shakti-one. Shame.
