Edited 5 years agoFollowing their acclaimed "Hybrid Theory," Nu Metal icon Linkin Park unleashed Meteora and established themselves as gods within the Nu Metal genre, rising to the ranks of Deftones, System of a Down, and KoRn. The dual vocal styling of Mike Shinoda and the late Chester Bennington lay waste to traditions within the Metal genre and opt for a more experimental sound by leaning more heavily towards hip-hop than metal. Though this is a foundational aspect of Nu Metal as a whole, Linkin Park takes their hip-hop influence a bit further than others within the subgenre.
Meteora features tracks with lyrics focused on themes of frustration and alienation. In most tracks, Shoonda provides poetic narration while Bennington brings the heat of emotion with screaming exclamation. The pair harmoniously conflict with one another and only deviate from this format on handful of tracks. On such tracks, Bennginton's high tenor voice is used to convey vulnerability.
For fans of this album, I recommend listening to Adema's album "Unstable." It boasts less polish and production than Meteora but lyrically deals with similar themes.
