Sounds great. Shame about the songs, or lack of.
Back in the day, when this album was released, I vividly my heart sinking as I dropped the needle onto the groove and Modern Love blasted out, in all of its unsubtle racket. The title track, i.e the single, had left me cold, and I preferred Iggy’s China Girl, so straight away Side One was done and dusted as far as I was concerned.
Then we had the horrible remake of Cat People on Side Two, a fairly mediocre cover of an old Metro song, Ricochet, which at least tried to be different, and the horribly inconsequential Shake It finishing the album off.
I had waited nearly 3 years for this. My ears were still getting excited by Low, “Heroes” etc etc so this felt like an aural bucket of cold water tipped over the head. And just to add insult to injury you were bashed around the head by the bucket at the same time.
Even the artwork and typography looked naff. I think part of me hoped that this would be a one-off and with the next album DB would be back with his usual pioneering, exciting output.
How wrong I was :( -
All in all a very good sounding vinyl record from 83 dynamic, punchy and clear. Pressed in . Self-produced by Bowie and the outstanding guitar of Stevie Ray Vaughan.
