My copy (goodwill find from long ago) sounds fantastic- clear treble, full bass- a very nice lp. If you can find a clean version-

Tom’s 12 July ‘23 newsletter: The good - Universal will reissue his Island Records catalog ~ Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Frank’s Wild Years, Bone Machine, and The Black Rider ~ on CD and on vinyl this Fall. Limited edition coloured vinyl options, too. The bad - the remastering is, again, being overseen by Tom and Kathleen Brennan. Expect the same veiled, shaved-highs sonics as presented in the Asylum reissues.
Update: Chris Bellman digitally remastered from the original tapes. Good chance these remasters will sound better than the Asylum catalog reissues. -
I tested this on a technics in a record store and was pretty disappointed with the sound. With these prices I won't even bother until there are 2lp reissues

I love all Tom Waits records, truly. But the Island records from the 80s from Swordfishtrombones to Big Time are my favorites, and Franks has long been my “pick one” Waits album. This recording is dynamite. Speciality, Masterdisk, and DMM were matches made in Heaven. Good separation and I love where Tom is in the soundstage. This record, as fans know, is naturally bass forward. That emphasis is wonderfully given life here without being overly dominant. God, I love this record. Thanks to everyone involved with this masterpiece.

I am in agreement that this is a gem! He seemed to fully figure out his "character" by this time. The songs don't seem to follow pop or singing structures that kind of made catchier songs on Raindogs and SFTB... but instead follow this cool story teller logic. Songs that are too catchy sometimes get old to me, but I can keep listening to this and go into his cool alternative world.
