By October 2005, when PorcupineTree played two consecutive dates at Chicago’s Park West, they had already released two albums that are still widely considered among their finest (2002’s “In Absentia” and 2005’s “Deadwing”). They already were a staple name in the progrock scene, and their fanbase was steadily increasing.

It was, therefore, the perfect time to record a live album, and the above Chicago dates were the chosen ones.
The setlist was, of course, heavily based on the latest two above mentioned albums, but it also wisely included less obvious B-sides, such as “Revenant”, “Mother And Child Divided”, “Buying New Soul” or “So Called Friend” for the joy of the die-hard fan.

The result is, as everything out of the Steven Wilson universe, a flawlessly performed, recorded and produced capture of a sweet moment in the story of a band at the heights of its powers, but still at the “cult” end of the popularity spectra, awaiting for the definitive breakout that “Fear Of A Blank Planet” would be, only one year in the future.

Of course, the band excels at the more ambient sounding songs and parts, but heavier songs such as “Open Car”, “Blackest Eyes” or the above mentioned “Mother And Child Divided” are also performed here with the coat of raw energy that a live gig can provide, showing how PT could masterfully control both the atmospheric and the high voltage ends of its studio work and translate them to the stage. The delicacy of “Lazarus” or the haunting atmosphere of “Heartattack In A Layby” are also wonderfully translated to stage, truly fleshing out their essences into exquisite live renditions.

My favourite moments are, of course, two of my favourite songs out of the band’s whole songbook: “Don’t Hate Me” and the magnificent “Arriving Somewhere… But Not Here” where the band shifts like clockwork forth and back between all the different soundscapes they can summon, truly making this a perfect capture in time of a band that was, definitely, arriving somewhere.

Best Live performance, this has more energy than Tilburg show which is also a landmark live event in PT discography, and was issued on vinyl, and this also deserves a LP given how energetic Gavin is here, the extended drum solos and elevated psychedelic soundscapes, just makes this is a AAA performance, and the mix is already 24bit on the bluray, and can be transferred to lathe.

I mean if we can have House of Blues on Vinyl which got nothing on this, then I'm sure SW can do the transfer. Bluray is fantastic but LP is no 1 for collection puprose.

      Just few words...

Just an FYI - The audio for this release has NOT been remastered. Steven has been quoted as saying the mastering is exactly the same as it was in 2006.

Wow, what an incredible release. An already excellent DVD release becomes even better with this Blu-ray release featuring all the surround material from the DVD now presented in both uncompressed LPCM surround (should be your choice unless your connection is either optical or digital coaxial and you cannot get lossless/uncompressed surround) or dts-HD Master Audio. Choose the latter if your connection is optical or coaxial and you'll get the 1.509 Mbps dts lossy core. That's why it's included, best audio options for every equipment set-up.

Wonderful remastering, another superb release involving Steven Wilson.
