New York band The National have become a presence. The moment Matt Berninger’s fervent baritone begins to tug at your heartstrings; when the drums start pounding their warm, near-tribal rhythms; when the richly imioned guitar tones start to light up the melody—you know you’re listening the new National album, and you know it matters. Few bands are able to slide into the soul of a song as easily as The National, even fewer are willing to take that risk. It feels like there are more instruments involved this time, and a noticeable electronic presence. There is power and beauty here, restraint and open-wound honesty. also play in El Vy, LNZNDRF, Pfarmers, Clogs. Contributing musicians come from Mouse On Mars, The Walkmen, Bon Iver, The Gloaming, Ester Drang, Octave Minds, Buke and Gase, more. Recalls bands such as My Jerusalem, Tindersticks, American Music Club, Jenny Besetzt, Calla, Dream City Film Club. “Sleep Well Beast” is an incredibly touching, moody downer of an album. It’s heartwarming & touching, your best friend with a bottle of wine and a book of sad love poems. It’s everything you want in album by The National…and a bit more. Recommended.
