You can’t just play this once - it always gets a couple of spins. Despite being too dark for me as a teenager, it’s aged perfectly (along with Nightporter) and is now one of my go to 80s classics. Hunt down the card sleeve on 7” rather than the later paper version. -

Having just listened again to Ghosts after quite a few years, it strikes me how it feels like somewhat of a Darkwave anthem.
Lyrically of course it fits the bill, plus the synths are damned "doom" at times. Of course the chorus melody is chirpy, but overall it's such a sad song.
I would not be ashamed to play this in a Darkwave set. -

Fantastic band often too out there and experimental for the record buying public of the day to digest. Ghosts if a seriously unique, dark, moody song. One of the better releases of 1982. -

Ghosts is possibly Japan's finest moment. Richard Barbieri's keyboards are amazing. -

Probably the second most unlikely major hit single I can think of after Laurie Anderson's O Superman. One of very few Japan tracks David Sylvian doesn't appear totally embarrassed by. To the best of my knowledge, the only other Japan songs he's ever performed as a solo artist are Nightporter and The other side of life. Ghosts is also the only Japan song to feature on a Sylvian best of compilation, although in a remixed (vocals are re-recorded) and inferior (IMO) version. A timeless masterpiece.
