Joel's first greatest hits compilation, which compiles the majority of his most popular tracks up until 1983. Two new tracks were recorded for this album, "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" and "The Night Is Still Young", both of which became "hits" in their own rights.
Several versions of this album exist, with altered track listings. The original LP version contains the 1981 live version of "Say Goodbye To Hollywood", "New York State Of Mind" with a different saxophone solo, and single versions of five songs : "Just The Way You Are", "My Life", "Big Shot", "Pressure" and "Tell Her About It". Additionally, some issues replaced "Don't Ask Me Why" with "Honesty".
The original CD version of this album adds "Captain Jack", "The Entertainer", "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", as well as the 1981 live version of "She's Got a Way".
The remastered 1998 CD version of this album replaces the five single versions with their album versions and replaces the live version of "Say Goodbye To Hollywood" with the original 1976 album version.
Some international markets released the album in two parts, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.

You like Billy Joel? This album is an all you can eat buffet of hit after hit without any filler and definitely needs a Mofi or MOV updated remastered pressing because this Greatest hits is a classic that needs to be on everyone's turntable and record collection. It might not be (sigh) super quiet but the songs make up for the lack of silence you "might" hear on an OG copy. The music is bold and clear and the midtones are warm. Buy a copy if you find one reasonably priced. You won't regret it! -
I am a sucker for original pressings and also AAA reissues. Even then, I would have to disagree with the reviews of this version which call it poor etc. I think it sounds really good! For someone like Billy Joel, a Mofi type audiophile treatment works really well (even if it’s digital step involved). -
This is a great sounding pressing with nicely balanced mastering. -
Just found this Europe first press randomly in the wild. To me, this is a fantastic compilation. Dead silent vinyl as Netherlands presses typically are and beautifully mastered by Ted Jensen. I have all of Billy Joel's albums, but this is a really nice way to hear all the highlights at once.

Edited 10 months agoAgree with other reviewers here - this is a very solid pressing, with strong dynamics. It’s important to that the sound quality of Joel’s later material - Glass Houses onwards, is nowhere as good as his earlier albums. Disc 1 outshines Disc 2 by a considerable margin. Artwork is sturdy and the additional 16 page booklet looks fantastic. -
Although the packaging is always top tier, I am sometimes skeptical of Japanese sound quality. However this pressing flys high above any I’ve ever heard. Dynamic with the smallest details but punchy and wide sound when it comes to the louder numbers. Recommend highly. A new reference pressing in my collection!

Edited one year agoPretty much everything you will ever need. SACD not quite as good as the vinyl - though the vinyl is insanely noisy, even by MOFI standards. Great packaging and booklet top off a 5 ⭐️ release.
