Notes
"A Quick One" was originally released as Reaction 593 002 on December 9, 1966. It reached #4 in the U.K.
In the U.S. (and presumably Canada) the release was held back until April or May 1967. The album was retitled "Happy Jack'.
The initial UK release was mono-only. In several European countries (, Italy, Spain), Polydor released the stereo album I'm A Boy (among other places) instead.
Stereo and "false stereo" mixes appear in bewildering and inconsistent combinations among the initial stereo releases of these various albums. 'So Sad ' was only true stereo in the North American releases. 'Whiskey Man' and 'Don't Look Away' were only in true stereo on European album releases.

Reviews

This reissue of A QUICK ONE sounds better than I've heard many of these songs sound before, particularly the epic final track. Solid stereo mix (with the exception of one song) and a clean, vivid, lively soundstage. Zero issues with my copy, the vinyl is flat, clean and quiet with no noticeable surface noise.
-
The record itself is a bit warped, but it doesn't effect playback. The actual sound is superb, although the original recording wasn't exactly audiophile quality so don't expect your socks to be rocked off. Still, this is the best I've heard this album sound

I got a VG++ copy of this for $14 dollars recently, and after looking at the prices on here it seems that I got a very good deal! This pressing sounds great, much better than my 1974 American MCA “Two-fer” copy. Definitely worth picking up if you’re looking for a good copy of this incredible album.

This is the worst 'A Quick One' edition soundwise. Dull, muddy and NOT in stereo. Nice cover, though... Most covers has laminate peeled completely off!
-
On a previous review of this release, a person complains about the "horrible digitally distorted mix" of SO SAD , but my copy doesn't have this problem... this song has a terrific sound, with huge bass... So I suppose there must be some defective copies here & there ?
I've been listening to this album for more than 40 years, I've listened to different UK, Japan & pressings, especially the nice 1980 Japanese Polydor reissue (side 2 of which has only one song in true stereo), and I finally thought that there would never be a perfect stereo release of this LP... but IMHO this one comes very close ! ... except for SEE MY WAY, which would have been better in true mono, instead of the fake stereo we got here. There is an odd distortion on one channel of the "engine driver" section of A QUICK ONE WHILE HE'S AWAY, but other stereo releases have the same defect... and hey, that's the Who in 1966, not DARK SIDE OF THE MOON !
-
I thoroughly enjoyed A Quick One. It's pop, it's quirky, it's early The Who. The 1/2 speed master sounded clear with a lot of separation throughout the instruments and vocals, except for Heat Wave, which sounded dull to me, absent of any kind of dynamics. Too bad Happy Jack, released as a single at the time, was not included on the initial release of A Quick One. What were they thinking? I'll have to pick up a later Happy Jack release.
-
how exactly is this a mispress? if the only problem is stereo labels on a mono record isn't that a misprint?
-
Who put this release up here with only a picture of the front cover?? Please add the back cover, labels, and inner sleeve if original. This does not help to identify a release. Thanks.

Edited one year agoI have heard 3 copies of this 200g pressing. All of them skip in two places on 'So Sad '. This appears to be a pressing fault as the skips were there when played on several different turntables. I wonder if the 150g pressing has the same issues.

referencing Happy Jack (LP, Album, Stereo) DL 74892
This is the best sounding og pressing of this record ive ever heard from US plants. It doesn’t state here, but this was almost certainly outsourced to the Indianapolis plant and it sounds better than the Gloversville and Pinckneyville plants by a mile.
