Notes
New Order's 4th, and their first self-produced single. Released on 10 May 1982 as 7" and 12".
Peaked at # 29 of the UK singles charts.
Hurt on the original UK 7" is not a simple edit of the longer UK 12" version, but is in fact a different mix.
Note: This MR contains all Temptation releases and re-releases.

For me, the very early New Order is more satisfying than their catalogue from the 90's onwards. You can tell that they were experimenting with technology, and you can definitely detect the influence of Kraftwerks material on them. I believe that this version of Temptation was the continued 'jam' of the single version, so it's not a remix, and the 7" isn't an edit, so I can only assume that the recording of the track was in excess of 15 minutes -

Yeah, another winner. Flat, clean, no pops or other unwelcome noises. And most importantly, it sounds great. Ive still got my original and cant tell the difference between them, even in a blind test.
This is one of those singles that I always thought charted much higher than it did. See also Bowie’s Heroes and Depeche Mode’s Never Let Me Down. -

I think this is the best mix/version of the song. The perfect cut -

Sounds so much better than the 2019 reissue, and consistently the originals just don't disappoint. My copy came with inner sleeve marked "MADE IN ENGLAND R.S. 2-82". -

I love New Order in general, but am especially fond of their very early, pioneering electronic-based work in the 81-83 time period when they sounded like nothing else on the planet. Temptation (which needs no introduction) and Hurt are 2 particularly amazing examples of this time-period and you have not heard these songs until you've heard them on this 12" 45 RPM. While the later '87 re-recorded and much more polished version of Temptation is great, this version here is raw and full of punch. The analogue sequencing is so pronounced and you can hear each stroke of Barney's frantic rhythmic guitar strumming. And, of course, Peter Hook's thunderous bass practically knocks you in the face. Amazing work. For those who think of New Order as just an "80's synth pop band" check this out and you will hear how how experimental they sounded when mixing the rawness of post punk with early danceable synth technology. My pressing is dead quiet as well. -

My is a non MT2 pressing and my labels are on the wrong sides. Any one else had this issue? -

The spine on mine says “Now Order”, does it say that for anyone else’s copy? -

Does a 7” version of this exist at 45 rpm? I have an old Seeburg jukebox I would like to play it in. -
Unavailable in the US. It is available in UK digital stores. There must be a licensing issue with whoever owns the rights in North America.
