The First Edition* – The First Edition

The original UK release on the Tri-colour Steamboat label was mastered by Gordon Vicary at Pye studios. I can't say what effect this has on the album as a whole, but the big single 'Just Dropped In' is a bit different to other versions I've heard. It's a much more musical mix - there's nothing new, but the fuzz-laden power chords are moved slightly to the back and guitars and electric pianos given an important bit of breathing room at the front. The stereo-panning effect is perhaps not so pronounced, but the solos are much more enjoyable. Worth a listen if you can track down a copy.

"Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" is a great tune from a great movie. The wacky noises do really sound better on vinyl (and with a White Russian). As for the rest of the record, it's ok but doesn't live up to that track's greatness. "Home Made Lies" on the B-side has some country music rollick to it and is more legit than some of the other songs. They tried to rip off like every other contemporary act (Beatles, Kinks, Elvis, Cash, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Mamas and the Papas ) and it came out a technically sound but sometimes false affair. But that's pop for ya. If you put your brain on pause it's enjoyable.
