Notes
The UK release of Works Volume 1 (K 80009) had two different label layouts. Considering the left hand side of the labels, layout #1 had catalogue information in this order (Side A used as example):
SIDE ONE
STEREO
K 80009 (bold text)
(SD2-7000)
K 80009 A
Label layout #2 had a different order and made use of an asterisk. The fourth and fifth lines are indented:
SIDE ONE
STEREO
K 80009
K 80009A*
(SD 2-7000)
In addition, the last publisher on side 3 switches between two lines on the asterisk version and one line on the non-asterisk version, and the publisher on side one has an additional comma - "Palm Beach International Recordings Ltd.," on asterisk labels.
A copy could have all sides based on label layout #1, all sides based on label layout #2, or any combination of these.
All versions of K 80009 will need to have the labels specified in the Notes.
The UK release of Works Volume 1 also had at least two sets of etched handwriting on matrices, completely different to one another, also coexisting in some discs. Hence, beyond combinations of label layouts, beyond combinations of matrices, there is also resulting combinations of both.
Singles from this release:
C'est La Vie / Jeremy Bender ("C'est La Vie" Credited to Greg Lake)

Greg Lakes vocals remind my of David Brent from the office. -
Edited 7 months agoFlat and super quiet after a minimal dry clean with a DiscWasher brush. The mix is just okay. The orchestra pushes Greg’s guitar and wonderful vocals a bit too much to the back of the mix though. The bass is somewhat lacking and the mids tend to be a bit too prominent. Some minor EQ changes helped some. The soundstage is roomy and airy enough with good placement. Overall I think most fans will be pleased with this but just don’t set your expectations too high. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Absolutely brilliant sound, like you're sitting in a concert hall. One of the best LPs in my collection.

This is a nice pressing. The remastering fixed "Fanfare For The Common Man" to a more balance in volume. The original CD 7000-2 fatbox "Fanfare" was very low in volume at the beginning and then very loud towards the end. This remastered 2017 version makes it more balanced in volume.

I can't begin to imagine how disappointing this album must have been for ELP fans upon release. Going from Brain Salad Surgery or Welcome Back my Friends and getting THIS. A waste of 3 sides-worth of vinyl and packaging.
The first two sides of the album (Emerson's and Lake's) are so enormously boring. I doubt I ever come back to those songs again. Palmer's Side is way more interesting but I don't want to hear it again either tbh. And the last side to me felt uninspired, although I know some ppl love those tracks. Just a really really bad, tedious, LONG album in my estimation. -
The bonkers OTT reactions of the crowd on the live bonus tracks actually make them unlistenable for me; sorry!

It has occurred to me that the co-production credit to C. Palmer / G. Lake on Track C5 of the UK pressings (K 80009) is an error by the record company. It should have been Track C6 because Greg Lake was the producer of the original recording of "Tank" and listeners with keen ears will recognise that the second half of the track is a remix of the original recording.
