Blues Pills – Lady In Gold

Even though it was received with mixed reactions, to me "Lady In Gold" is an excellent album that showed that Blues Pills' magnificent first LP was not a mirage or a one- hit wonder.

Some people saw "Lady In Gold" as a unashamedly calculated movement made by the band in order to reach wider audiences, by reducing the rock element of their sound and focusing on Elin's voice.
This maybe had something to do with choosing "I Felt A Change" as second single to introduce the album, a quite formally simple and laid back yet intense and undoubtedly beautiful song with Ellin showing what her voice is capable of over a bed of lush keys.

And while it's true that the album harbours a more diverse, open sound that the debut did, I can't see the sell-out thing here: this is a young band doing what every band should do: exploring. As a result, the guys tilted their sound here to the more psychedelic, soul, funky, you-name-it infused wavelength of the spectrum, but the results still feel true and honest to me.

Also (and I don't really tend to use this adjective in the music I listen to) I feel this is and undoubtedly... sexy album. It might have something to do with the rhythm-driven songwriting, ruled by trepidant bass and drums (excellent work here by André Kvarnstrom, replacing Cory Berry) and Elin's powerfully commanding yet playfull voice (listen to "Little Boy Preacher" or "Bad Talkers", album highlights to me, to see what I mean) but that's how I feel about it.

A great cover of Tony Joe White's "Elements And Things" closes the album in style, following the trend of ending the album with a cover as "Gypsy" did on the band's debut.
All in all, a great and somehow different follow- up to an spectacular debut that, from my point of view, honoured the band's will to try new things instead of just repeating a formula that worked just fine in the debut.

I have this version, with Testpressung in the runout in black vinyl so I wonder of they used these masters for the later runs?
There's a lot of surface noise, pops and clicks on my version despite being new and cleaned with a Pro-ject cleaner.

Isnt this just the "Dark Green" version?! Since the sticker says dark green (instead of green) and there is no such version listed.

Anyone heard about the picture disc edition of this album?

Mellower than their debut album. However, it is a fine piece of retro rock.

Why are most vinyl version dated as Aug. 5th but few are Sept. 16th? Are those from September reissues?

There is a silver edition of "Lady in Gold" on the official Blues Pills Website. I don't see it here. It's a new edition?

My Gold LP has the word 'testpressung' in the runout. anyone else seen this on the Gold LP

Seems to be the better pressing for LP edition. In gold no warped record, no surface noises and no crackle. The sound are gorgeous and lady in gol in vinyl seems to have a different master for 2 songs on the A-side
