Maracanã (also known as Maracanã Stadium, Estádio do Maracanã and Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho) is one of the world's most famous football stadiums, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It opened on June 16, 1950 and has since been renovated in 2000, 2006 and 2013. Current (2014) capacity of the stadium is 74,738, but the highest attendance was 173,850 (some sources: 199,854) during the FIFA World Cup 1950 Final, Uruguay vs Brazil, on July 16, 1950.
Maracanã has mainly been used for football games, but it has also hosted a number of concerts and other sporting events.
