Nu Groove Records

Profile:

House label run by Judy Russell (2) and was initially founded to release stuff by Rheji & Ronald Burrell who have been managed by Frank and Karen at the time.
Nu Groove, built on the foundation of the Burrell twins who'd escaped from an abortive R'n'B career with Virgin Records, was fast becoming the hippest house label. Nu Groove had started the year before with records like Bas Noir's "My Love Is Magic," and Aphrodisiac's "Your Love," and by 1989 they were on a roll.
Nu Groove never had a sound - with producers as disparate as the Burrells, Bobby Konders and Frankie Bones that wasn't conceivable - and they never really had one big record, but the concept of the label went from strength to strength. Among their producers was Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, yet to hook up with "Little" Louie Vega, who was moving into house with his Freestyle Orchestra project. Nu Groove's first competitor was to come in the form of Strictly Rhythm, who opened up in 1989.
Judy Russell and Tu Chicks label.
UK label Defected acquired the label in 2017 and started to release new music on the imprint in 2021.

This is a top class label. So essential. It's disheartening to witness the label changing hands from 2021 and falling into the wrong hands. The music, at best, is avarage. so sad

Such a shame how the label just suddenly stopped releases at 1992. After all Nu Groove was one the most well known House labels coming out of the USA. Then in 1992? it vanished. Nowadays it just concentrates on re releases from back in the days of the LSD !.

i have to make a fuss of the burrel brothers more than has been done so far, capable of the classiest hypnotic grooves for me they are spot on, and no one as mentioned major problems by lenny d -what a banger!

This label and the Go Bang/ESP label were totally essential back in the early 90's!!! 89 and 90 were very busy times for Nu Groove and blimming ace times too!

Nu Groove put out some great records but the Burrell tracks are not my thing

The go to label people quote when they wish to enter the cool school, whether those that claim it to be their favourite label actually own any 12's is another thing.

Well, i have been hunting like a maniac in the last 2 years, i bought my first Nu Groove record in 1992, & didn't like it so much at that time, i was more into hardcore back than.
I got me half the catalogue now,& Yes, my taste has changed with time, & i do love some of the Nu Groove releases!
This label stands for a variety of house genres, from really nice deep house, wicked breakbeat tracks, even some rave tunes, techno, & the early releases have some hiphouse tunes as well.
Great respect for this label, & my favorite Nu Groove records are , Jimmy Crash - Crash Course, Project "86"* - Industrial Bass, Lost Entity - Lost Entity.
If you see a Nu Groove record, take a listen, you might be suprised by the tune thats playing!!

Nu Groove was doing it! As a house label back in the day. Out of the extensive catalog there are some absolute killer recordings that got hammered at early raves in UK 88/89 and pirate radio in 90 - There is also some very experimental/tracky recordings too, but you have to appreciate the spirit and diversity of this label - An all time great house label. If I have to pick favs its gonna be the 33 1/3 Queen release or Rydims from Bobby Konders or In The Pocket by Dynamic Duo- but hey there's so many!
