Zebra was originally established as a progressive rock label, handled by the German division of Ougenweide, etc.
Sometime in the mid 1970's, the brand was sold to Metronome Records GmbH who changed it into a budget label with children's records, pop, folk and classical music.

According to current GVL information, the label is now held by Universal Music Entertainment GmbH.
