Profile:

The Matrix was a nightclub in San Francisco from 1965 to 1972. A renovated former pizza shop, The Matrix was co-owned by Hunter S. Thompson, who was then a contributor to Rolling Stone.

The Matrix opened on August 13th 1965, showcasing Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow was photographed at The Matrix.

In the Fall of 1966 the Club was run by Bill Ehlert, owner of the Jabberwock - whose house artist/designer Tom Weller (2) then helped promote Matrix shows with handbills & posters.

Early in 1971, the original Matrix closed and owner/operator move it to 412 Broadway in late summer 1973. The club finally close after the Iggy and The Stone, San Francisco.
