Goldmine Soul Supply

I used to live in Todmorden... The dark valley... And I once got the opportunity to go and look in Goldmine Soul Supply... It was literally like te matrix... The building looked smaller outside than it did inside... Sort of like a musical archive within a tardis... There were thousands upon thousands of 7" records everywhere you looked and I mean vertically as well as horizontally! It was the sort of thing DJ Shadow would have loved! And saying that the man from Cali actually did come to little old Todmorden (or Tod as the Northerners call it) to have a private viewing! DJ Shadow had literally been in a couple of months before I went as he was touring around the UK.

I think Tim Roberts showed me around... Now I'm no aficionado when it comes to Northern Soul and super rare breaks so was a tad overwhelmed! I told Tim this as didn't want to look at twat and said I really loved Funk because of my love for old school hip hop. He was very humble and understood as he had been collecting Northern Soulfor decades... So as a really kind gesture he gave me a couple of Funk compilations that he and his friends had complied which was a nice touch. I never went back there but would see the guys in town.. But I would always buy their comps from a wicked shop called Beatin' Rhythm in Manchester which was another place DJ Shadow had frequented as his photo was on the wall... Shame to see they closed there doors in 2011... Maybe there is time yet? Who knows? But it was a great experience and a happy memory!
