Edited 3 years agoI wanted to add that the original mastercuts CD series seems to have got a repress at some point. I collected all the original releases from 1991 onwards and in about 2000 I started finding the series in a slip case version. I'm not sure when they were reissued and they are not listed here on Discogs. I bought a job lot off Ebay in about 2014 mostly consisting of reissues and found they were exactly the same except that they came with a new slip case with BMD and an email address on the back. The barcodes are identical. The slip cases also have a slightly different title (Mix Mastercuts, Jazz Funk Mastercuts, Mellow Mastercuts, etc., dropping the "Classic" and changing "Definitive" to "Essential"). I tried to collect all of the slip case versions, but as they are not listed here it means lots of enquiries. Most sellers have the original releases.

The early mastercuts albums were simply brilliant. Carefully selected tracks of the highest quality available. Always a good representation of the genre the compilations represented.
The later issues bear very little resemblance. Poor quality audio, sometimes with audible hum or needle hiss. Typos on track listings. In some cases tracks appearing in compilations that really don't belong in the chosen genre. Give the later ones a miss as there are far better compilations. -
Edited 5 years agoHi Everyone, does anyone have a copy of the compilation
Various – Classic Reggae Mastercuts Volume 1

I am really after this. Do we know anything bout the quality of this release ?
Thanks, B. -
Superb well curated compilations that regenerated great interest in Jazz Funk for many. Ideal to start exploring the genre.
I have to agree with all other reviews, old mastercuts only as the stuff brought out later is a joke and only using the name of the series.
The original series could have gone a long way, pity it ended. These LPs kick started a massive crate diggin interest in the genre for me, and have been collecting tons since. -
If you want a modern alternative to mastercuts, I highly recommend Backbeats. Basically the same philosophy, but they actually do it.

The original founder left the company in 1994. He produced the first 21 releases which are listed below. Most if not all of these initial releases are well compiled and reliable as to content claims. You will notice versions are correctly designated as original, original album, 12" or 7". While they attempted to maintain the original concept and quality for a while, anything produced after that should be scrutinized for content. Claims made as to "Original 12" Versions" are often false and what you're really getting is radio edits or edits that were produced for other compilations. In 2004 the label was licensed to Apace Music and the content was further degraded.
The following issues (listed chronologically) were compiled by the original founder and are generally a safe buy. Beware those issued after these.

Classic Jazz-Funk Mastercuts Volume 1

I too was a pretty big fan of the Mastercuts series - up until they started releasing their 3-CD box sets. The Mastercuts Reggae from 2005 (not to be confused with Mastercuts Classic Reggae) is useless, comprising second-rate live versions and other selections you probably don't want! the compilation sounds like one (three) of those bargain-priced releases with remakes of the songs in the place of the original versions. The original Mastercuts were owned by Beechwood music, while the newer 3-CD sets are issued by Dynamic Music & Media. It would seem that the Mastercuts name was simply sold and is now being used to capitalize on the Mastercuts name (and deserved reputation). The Beechwood Mastercuts releases are golden, but do yourself a favour and skip the 3-CD sets - they are fakes!

I agree totally with the previous reviewer, but I would say that compared to the latest releases using the Mastercuts brand name, CUTSCD46-57 are actually pretty good. As are the two "Anthems" CDs. After that, please don't bother! I bought three of the 3CD 2005-2007 series and the packaging and track selection was pretty weak. For example, I bought "Funk Divas" and all three inlay cards read "Northern Soul" along the spine. It's clearly a printing error of some kind, but you just don't expect that with Mastercuts. That's because it isn't Mastercuts anymore. Stick to the original series. I have mine in a locked box!

Edited 6 years agoI bought my first Mastercuts compilation in 1994. I was looking for "New Jack Swing 2" that i heard on radio but i fell on "Classic Rare Groove" who meant nothing for me at this time. I decided to buy it anyway & then i feel in love with Mastercuts.
I bought every compilation, waiting for the new one like a child wanting his toy. Those are ESSENTIAL, with a superb artwork, top classics & representative tracks, perfectly remastered and in a coherent tracklist position. At first Ian Dewhirst conceived & selected tracks, then guest DJs (like Dave Lee or Jazzie B) or journalists took place.
As all good things come to an end, the end of the "Classic" series was the end of quality imho. CUTS-01 to CUTS-43 are the best if you wanna know the truth about a Dance Music genre.
