Melodisc (3)

Profile:

UK label, also appears as "Melodisc Records".
Label Melodisc and Company Melodisc Records Ltd. = one of the first UK independent record companies - originally based in 12 Earlham Street, London WC2.
Specialised in 'ethnic' recordings, initially licensed from overeas labels, soon produced recordings in the Capital. There were many African bands active in London during the '50s and '60s, mainly from West Africa, and frequently mixing musicians from different countries. The result was a distinctive highlife sound, frequently quite different from what you would have expected to hear in Nigeria or Ghana. Many of these bands recorded for the Melodisc label. Melodisc issued an incredibly wide range of music on singles, from merengue by Enrique Aviles to calypso by Mighty Sparrow, from R&B by Louis Jordan to the theme from the Thunderbirds puppet series.
