Merge Release - New Function - Post your merge requests here!

As you may be aware from this thread, we now have the beginnings of a 'Merge Release' function for the database.

At the moment, only Discogs s can initiate a merge, whilst we test the function and spot any problems or errors.

Please post here any releases you think need merged. Please give links to the two releases, and full reasoning for the merge. Also, please state which version release data should be kept.

I'll process the merges slowly (possibly only one a day), as I don't want to do a load them find out there is a problem. But in any case, it won't hurt to queue possible merges up here so they can be worked through once we are confident in the function.

Also, please let me know if you see any problems!

They appear to be the same. Not much difference in of data or owners/wanters, but 970921 has a better set of images.

I don't see a difference in these two at all. The original submitter of The Clash - Train In Vain (Stand By Me) as a unique submission.

Note that there is no notice or warning in the history of the one to be deleted, and the release data is simply copied from that to the other. Worse, the number of owners/wanters does not appear to have increased on the one being kept. [Edit: that has happened now].

At first glance, the current removal system looks easier to understand than the merging process.

I assume the merge function is an alternative to removing duplicate releases. If so, I think the following two (relatively simple) releases need to be merged:

Elton John - The Very Best Of....Elton John (r2541253)

Same title (with only a punctuation difference), same catalog no., same tracklisting, same country.

I believe r2536807 (Elton John - The Very Best Of....Elton John), and the fact that it's an Australian release.

I originally submitted r2541253 (Elton John has a gazillion releases, because these two releases are compilations (often difficult to track duplicates), and because different labels were entered on the two releases (so no submission warning came up), both ended up in the database.

I've both PMed the submitter of r2536807 and entered a comment in its history about the duplicate status, but have received no replies yet.

My submission (r2541253) is more complete, though I was getting ready to vote for its removal due to it being the later submission.

Merge function is back? This is good news indeed.

Regarding the number of owners/wanters, that was updated within an hour if not less - the old number may have been displaying initially for a period due to caching on my end.

This is where I think there may be some confusion as to what the result of merge will be, i.e. what should get copied where, and where the duplicate removal process provided clarity, in that one entry is removed and the data of the other simply updated (ideally). Things may be clearer to me when those Elton John comps are merged, though that seemed an ideal case for binning 2536807 and keeping 2541253.

It would be nice if there was a more exact definition as of what this new Merge actually does to the releases in question.

Yes, most certainly.

The newest release is removed from the database, and we transfer all the collection, wantlist, lists, marketplace sales, ratings etc to the oldest one.

At the moment, the images on the oldest release are kept. We plan to merge all the images from the newer removed release to the older remaining releases 'disabled images' section, so they can be enabled as required.

The person doing the merging selects whether to transfer the data from the newest release or not. That is done as a separate step, and can be voted on as well (after the merge goes through).

The 2 entries discussed here: http://discogs.cinepelis.org/help/forums/topic/326151 would be good candidates for a merge, IMO, instead of the removal already in progress. Subsequent discussion and editing on the specifics of labels and companies would have to follow. The one up for removal has the correct track sequence.

Well - I'd advice you to be cautious about deciding entered data from looking at pictures. That is really volatile.

Who added the pics on the "UK" edition? The original submitter? If so, yes - a merge is needed.
But it might very well be that someone added the incorrect pics, and instead og adding them to the European edition, they happened to land on the UK edition.
Then the pics needs to be "merged", and not the releases themselves.

(the pics were NOT added by the initial submitter, BTW)

But you might very well be right, but very, very, often, sadly - people add incorrect pics. Sometimes even "borrowing" a pic from a CD leaflet, and submitting this as "This is the vinyl cover. I have it".

So adding the wrong pics/country/edition is bound to have happened a lot.

I was going to images to the European edition, but they are exactly the same as the "UK" edition.
Perhaps the submitter of of the 1st only entered the UK cat# (Distribution Code?).

This releases seem to be the same, the only difference is the barcode, and believe that is a typo, because i have googled the barcode and one doesn't appear to exist (only in the discogs database) and the other one exists, i've tried to the original submitter, but he since quit discogs, and the other s don't respond to my comments.

Merge will be the only acceptable way to do it once the feature goes live. Until then, the guidelines stay, and remove release is the accepted method. This testing phase is just to iron out any problems before it goes live, as this is quite a 'strong' feature that potentially affects a lot of s collections, sales etc.

Then the submitter of the second one noticed he/she also had the digipak so changed it to look exactly the same as my submission, so I guess they can be merged.

I'm not sure about this legumes-SALES. Arguably, Die Ärzte - 13 should be changed to represent the jewel case versions with the '557 160-2' cat#, as the release was potentially in the DB for 5 years under that impression for most s.

These are duplicates. The older entry probably has the correct release time, so I'd keep that data (I couldn't find anything official but Juno, Deejay.de and decks.de all give this release date).

On the other hand, the newer version has an image and more s.

Folks, this is for merging releases only. There is not a merge label function, and we are not planning on that just now. You would need to edit each release to change the label. I'd advise starting a new thread for that.

Thanks, the merge test is on hold at the moment pending a programming update, I'll do them once it is ready.

If data is copied from one to the other version it would be great that the contributors of the removed version appear in the list of the older one.
They may have had a lot of work by adding or editing release informations.

Any further edits that need to be done and are thought necessary (they are a tricky thing to catalogue, but although a pain for searching the database I think how they are listed in the older listings is more accurate as I've explained) could perhaps be done after the duplicate subs are merged into the older subs.

I have spotted an issue with the images not being transferred across properly. This is not the end of the world - images can still be saved and re-ed, but I'll let the developers know about this and try to get it fixed ASAP.

It is likely that what is happening is the 1 remove release per day restriction is happening for merges as well. We can discuss the merits of this in due course, it's probably just as well to take this at a slow pace until some of these issues have been cleared up.

The issues notes above are being looked into right now, hope to have a solution reasonably soon.

nik, will using the former method of merging via removal requests now be outlawed? If one wanted to circumvent the automation that keeps the earlier submission in case of duplicates, one could get a gaggle of friends to vote, use the old removal method, and keep "their" sub while killing an earlier sub.

Yes. Theoretically, this is already the case since I updated the guidelines, but this is a transition period, and as we are testing etc it is better we take is slow for at least a couple of days till any further issues are ironed out. Once it seems everything is running smoothly, I'll make an announcement and we can do the full switchover.

Hello, possible merge candidates. The only difference I can see between the two is the way the Cat# is entered. Same number but one uses spaces and the other all runs together. Not sure if that in itself qualifies as unique releases. It could be just the way one entered as opposed to the other s entry. Looking at the submission notes and any images provided does not clarify why they are entered as different releases. Please take a look and . Thank You

I suspect 5 yrs ago, it maybe wasn't clear at all, all about the complexities to do with the Label Festival Records (NZ) Ltd., and when there might actually be no difference between a New Zealand version and an Australian version. Hence, I suspect these two should be merged (the later sub has the much better & fuller info & pics)

I agree this is 99% a duplicate. Tim has asked that we make certain and rightly so, so I've asked the OS via PM to advise if his also has the labels stating limited edition. If that is satisfied then I'll seek to merge them.
