Glasgows oldest record store. Established in 1960's and has seen every aspect on music in that time. Currently stocking techno/trance/hard dance. Also carry equipment/bags and have publishing arm run from same premises as well as in house studios and a EDM production course.
Has bargain bins which are restocked weekly and listening posts.
Friendly efficient service. (I would say that but I have my off days)

This is crate diggers heaven. Always replenished with all genres of music. Rock/Jazz/Folk/EDM. I check it 2-3 times a week and have found some crackers there. You need to be quick and dig deep! Up until a few weeks ago all the records were on the floor in crates and I actually ended up taking physio for my back! When they hadn't seen me for a while and asked I explained and they told me they were putting all the vinyl on racks in the basement! Still some crates below the racks worth a look and thy also have vast amounts of CD's, DVD's and computer games.
No listening posts or website. Nice guys in there and are mainly into rock.

3 big bins of all EDM and a lot in other genres. Reasonanbly priced although can be quite expensive and sometimes poor condition so it's wee bit hit or miss.
Got one listening post and the staff always change as it's run by teeenage volenteers who wanna save the planet. :S

Only opened last week. This guy has over 120,000 records. I spoke to him last week and what he had in his new shop was only the tip of the iceberg apparently.
Although what I saw was mainly punk/rock/prog/psychedelic etc he tells me he is yet to stock the shop completely and showed me the basement area which he has plans for.
I'll update the details as soon as I have them all.

Carries a large stock of rock/punk/indie and all sub genres. No EDM whatsoever and so I rarely go in. I must say he has a great selection of memorabilia on all the kind of artists he stocks. t-shirts/posters/tobacco tins/lighters etc.
Really friendly and approachable guy who'll do what he can to help. His prices are good to if that's your sort of thing.
No listening posts and most stuff is 2nd hand so prices vary.

Not overly familiar with this one as it's towards the East of the city. I will have been in it but if I can't it must be pretty forgettable (coming from me who only buys one or two genres )
I'll check it out and update.

This shop is just along the road from my house and situated heading towards the West End. I called in because I seen the sign said 'Experimental' amongst other stuff. When I spoke to the guy I explained my idea of 'experimental' was Autechre, Aphex Twin and the likes. From what I gathered it certainly isn't his and I'm not even going to attempt to pretend I've heard of (let alone understand) some of the music he stocks. He explained to me he sold "avant garde, Japanese Folk Rock". I was like "oh really?" whilst starting to feel pretty mainstream in my tastes. It was at that point I noticed that what I thought was shop was actually a converted bedroom. :S
Having said that check it out if weird is your thing, and by weird I mean eating heavily salted chips from Barr Bru bottle after having had all you finger nails pulled out.

Good for cheap CD's and books. The City Centre branch has a very small amount of vinyl and you're unlikely to find much there. No 2nd hand and there's no vinyl at the Byres Rd one at all.

Found this only last week by chance and glad I did! Weird little shop (in a nice way) and again very well hidden on a lane just of Byers Rd, West End. He has wide range of music and all mainly vinyl which is sorted extremely neatly into genres and decades!!
I found all styles of music but only 2-3 bins of what he labelled as 'RAVE/HOUSE/90's'. All were in great condition and 2quid each and I picked up some bargains. He also sells old musical instruments and REALLY old hi-fi's. On the way to this shop you'll some very quaint and nice little boutique type shops and one called 'Relics' which sells... well.. relics and it's all a bit of a jumble sale but very interesting.

No worries. Only a few more to add and soon some to take off! :(
I'll do a small list of charity shops worth checking too and also an order/route in which some one visiting the city could pretty much check out the best of this bunch in one day and what route I would take (only involves a 5min subway ride to get them all in)
