I just got the CIP message and I have no idea why. I have received no messages that there are any releases that have errors. I can't even find a way to see what releases have negative votes/comments. This is very frustrating as I try very hard to get it right. I'm happy to contribute and happy to get it right and happy to make corrections but I have no clue how to manage this. -

i have just been put on the Contributor Improvement Program because i didnt delete an artist on a release i know nothing about, i really dont understand this. I created a new artist Starlight (22), because Starlight had been used on a classical record, and Starlight are actually 3 italian house producers. Because i knew nothing about the classical Starlight i checked all the Starlights in the database and couldnt find one involved in classical music, so i created a new one.
I then see a comment on the classical release from a , telling me to delete Starlight from this release, i politely told him to remove it himself, he then said 'By the way, making a wrong edit and then asking other s to revert it it somewhat inappropriate.............I relied that i knew nothing about this release, next thing i know is im on the CIP hahahhahaha
My question is should i always, without knowledge, delete an artist because someone (not Discogs Staff) told me to???? and should i edit a release i know nothing about????
Thanks -

Well, your average is 3,0 which is not CIP worthy (but it might be not yet updated) and I can't detect anything in your pendings … please link the release in question which is no longer there … hard to judge otherwise. -

Well, looking at the cover shows clearly that "starlight" isn't meant being an artist at all.
And reading your snotty comment and the fact that a member of staff had to intervene is clear enough. You violated an important basic rule here – read RSG §1.10.1 – and that's the result.
So this is not mainly about a wrong artist but about your conduct against others and not being able to rethink and redo your action (artist creation) regarding the facts and advice from an expirienced member in the sub history before and after your edit. -

thanks for the info, i will not correct anymore artists/labels/info etc. that i see that is incorrect, if i cant also correct the artists/labels/info etc. that i know nothing about which is linked to it incorrectly. (hope you can understand that) hahaha

......had removed the artist name, or if Poke_Mode had removed this info, then i wouldnt have seen the incorrect link, so please by all means think about this as the root of the problem

It seems you don't understand. You haven't corrected zilch – you removed an incorrectly added artist and added another one which was incorrect as well.
You didn't knew better and ignored comments which pointed you in the right direction.
One look at the star picture on the cover should have been enough to see that Poke_Mode was right.
This is a database … you don't change or remove data if you don't know exactly what you're doing.
Better hands-off if you don't know what's right, please. If you know an artist is incorrect … well, why not just comment? Don't add another wrong one or remove info – no negative reactions to face then. -

Personally I think people should be doing this more - just edit it if you're condident in the edit.
But there is no obligation to, and the other point of view is they want 'you' to learn and/or they don't want to take 'responsibility.' - you see the potential consequences of the latter, I guess. Or they just like handing out commands, definitely an element of that in some cases.

You're not blocked from making changes. You are blocked from changing submissions that other people have worked on (corrected) after you. The next step to get off of CIP is to get Correct votes. This takes time. People have to check every detail on the submissions whether you added them or not in order to vote. I only had time to check three but I will try and get back to it later. I did give you one Correct vote and left comments on another that needs some changes.
I should also add that your voting average is very close to high enough to get you off of CIP. It takes 12-24 hours after you reach that average (you may have done with my last vote) before the restrictions get released automatically by the system. Anyway, if you're not there already you are awfully close.
I hope you'll put this down as part of Discogs incredibly steep learning curve. We all went through it to some degree or another. What you are adding to the database is valuable and I really hope you'll continue. -

I have to it that some of the "tone" of advice I got here and there did not encourage me (not you!). I totally respect the need to be absolutely accurate. In fact I get a little frustrated when I come across a listing that in all respects is identical to another but no picture of the label and no notes indicating why it was considered unique.
I have aproximately 100 albums that I think are new releases for the data base. I'm happy to contribute and hopefully my mistakes will be learning opportunities.

I'm glad not me. I've had people think my comments were terrible and abusive even though they all resemble what I wrote in your submission notes. One thing you have to is that Discogs is international and what seems perfectly acceptable in one culture may seem horribly rude in another.
Let me give you an example from my experiences. I grew up in New York City and in Israel (Netanya and Tel Aviv). New Yorkers are blunt and to the point and Israelis are like New Yorkers only much more so, as in no niceties at all. Both cultures view that kind of communication as honest and value it. When I moved to the South I had more than a little culture shock. What's fine in New York is considered terribly rude here. Meanwhile folks from up north tend to find southerners rather phony and don't get "southern hospitality" at all. Do you know how you tell someone they are an absolute idiot, a moron, in the South? You say "Well bless your heart." That is an absolutely cutting insult. See what I mean?
JackKem
n fact I get a little frustrated when I come across a listing that in all respects is identical to another but no picture of the label and no notes indicating why it was considered unique.
That's flat out wrong. Discogs is a peer reviewed site. In cases like that I post a question in the release history/comments. If I don't get an answer in a week I initiate a merge. Now that you're off of CIP you can do the same if you like. -

I received a message saying that a submission couldn't be voted on because there is no image of the back cover. Is this specified somewhere in the submission guidelines? I can't find it anywhere.
This is the only response I've gotten on 20+ submissions. I appear to be permanently stuck in the CIP program until these can be reviewed and voted on. I've posted twice on the entire set, and also individually. I realize that Discogs is a 'crowd-sourced' app, but it seems there has to be a better way to do this. -

No, it is not required at all. OTOH, how on earth can you expect someone to vote on your submissions if they don't have the release and don't have a way to your data from images? You're not permanently on CIP (nobody is) but you should go to the thread dedicated to asking for votes and you should add additional photos on an external cite and link them back to your request for votes, -

I received some bad votes after not responding to requests for changes that lasted a month, because I was in the hospital. This plunged my average to under 3.00. I am now struggling to figure out how to proceed. Yes I have RTFM, yes I have put a good amount of time and effort into trying to fix my entries. I am consistently asking in posts for reviews. Some have been kind enough to offer me and votes. But this will still take ages. I have a lot of interesting releases I'd love to post (correctly of course), and am legitimately enthusiastic about sharing and documenting my findings.
Why not have a process to say, "place someone in CIP probation" should they show "good behavior"? My sense is that there are some that take it upon themselves to police posts and punish offending . In the end this is not a bad thing: such policing likely has a positive effect on overall data integrity, resulting in a performant database.
That being said: why not grant some s, those with exceptional ratings (or perhaps only discogs s) the right to review in CIP? It would be great to better balance the need for data integrity and not dampening contributor enthusiasm. -

I see you did at least post in one of the correct threads when asking for votes, but yeah, it's really crappy how the backlog seems to just keep growing, and hardly anyone is interested in mentoring.
By the way, I think some (many?) of your comments/reviews were deleted for violations of the review guidelines where it says This form is NOT to be used to correct any release, artist or label information held in the database. Corrections to the database should be submitted via the "Update" form on the relevant page.
Of course, when in the CIP, you can't update very much, but you should still be able to leave suggestions for corrections where they belong, in the submission histories. That's where you go when you click on Edit Release while viewing a release page. It is likely that when you leave a comment in the submission history, it will only be seen by the last person who edited (if they have not disabled those notifications), or by the next person who goes to make an edit (if they are paying attention), but it is the right place for it. -

Having just become aware of the CIP, I must say it is possibly the single most Orwellian thing I have heard of in the history of Discogs, and I have been here for a really long time. A good bit of the info in this 3+ year old thread is quite out of date and incorrect at this time. For those lost souls attempting to escape CIP and restore their Discogs "Social Credit" you will have to look elsewhere for hints on how to escape the Kafkaesque nightmare you now inhabit. -

Don't understand how to get of CIP. Surely I didn't follow all the rules, but I didn't kill someone. Some of the rules are not clear (album/compilation) and they are not followed in a lot of other releases neither. Some of the rules are a bit (?) absurd. So Emi is added as a label for som MfP releases, whereas it is not a label in these cases. Emi is mentioned as the mother-holding, not as a label.
But the worst is that I can't add any pictures neither. So here Discogs is punishing the community.
If you read the comments above regarding CIP, it is clear that CIP is over the top. -

As it stands, if you manage to get 7 Correct votes = 28 points (and no NmC, NMc or EI votes) your average will be 3,07, which should be enough for you to leave the CIP. As you only have 3 pending releases, for each release that is voted as C or C&C a place for you to create a new entry will open, until your average exceeds 3.01 and you can then submit as many releases as you like. -

You have received 17 votes in the last 10 days, most of them EI - so you must have done something strange.
Discogs needs credits "as on release" as we catalogue releases here.
[Uncredited] credits should only be used when a source (not "I know because I was involved") is given for everyone to confirm. -

There are a lot of things in your edits that need correcting.
Hijacking a thread isn't a great idea. The bonus, when you start your own thread, you get notifications when there is a response to your questions.
Two things around voting:
1) You should have a notification that you got those 17 votes.
2) You won't be able to edit those releases. You are only allowed to edit pending releases to you, where you were the last person to edit the release. When an EI happens, the previous person is now the latest person to edit the release (not you). -

Yes - correct, for physical media. So now you know.
When you are in CIP, you cannot add images to the release. You will have to the pictures to a file sharing service like Imgur.com. Then post those links here or in the submission notes of the release (just be sure to let me know you posted the links).
Critical about the pictures - the credits and track listing have to be easy to read, and you need to capture all of them. Just make sure they can be easily read once you them.
This is the official order for pictures - Front, gatefold (or interior of the CD case), back, and close up of the label (for a CD, the full CD - for vinyl, just the label). Then paper inserts or other things that are important. For your case, please make sure all the credits are crystal clear. There's no need to include the whole booklet if there are just pictures, editorials, or lyrics. We just need the credits.
The reason you need to post the credits and track list - we need to that what is in the submission / release is precisely what's printed on the recording. Since I don't own the recording, I have to rely on the images to do that verification (most other people that would try to help you are probably not owners either).
The good news about the pictures, once you are out of CIP, you can add them to the release.
Sorry about the extra step for showing the pictures. Thank you for doing this. I hope we're off to a good start. -

Medium quality photos, which is what you get from an older iPhone. Take your time, whenever.
I also made photos of Death of the Guardians of the State, just in case. -

They are perfection. I'll post back when I have a chance to do the verification. This one looks pretty simple. -

"Perfection" would be photos taken with my professional camera or scans done by a really good scanner. I'd say my photos are 7.8/10. -

Okay, one of the "wrong" votes is someone telling me to remove the "stereo" tag. From a stereo CD release.
You mean this? https://discogs.cinepelis.org/release/9604390-If-Only/history#latest
The vote was right then. At that stage we only added the Stereo tag when there was a mono one in the database. Stereo was the default after 1970. It was changed in the last year or two. -

Medium quality photos,
No reason to get fancy, or complicate things. Those images are plenty good enough.
OK, this Ravens Moreland - Space Heroin Sex Doll is a pretty easy to fix.
The key here is only enter what is physically on the recording. If you add anything that isn't on it, then you have to justify that addition with sources.
1) Track durations. They are not printed on the release. If you wish to include them, then you have write in the submission notes how you arrived at the durations. Or you delete them. You can't carry durations over from another release. With CD's it's usually pretty easy, write down what you see on the CD player or a computer. As the submission stands, I would remove the durations.
2) Credits. You can only use the credits printed on the release. You've taken pictures of everything that has printing on it. There is exactly one credit on the recording, "all songs written by Bruce Moreland".
You have two credits in the submission. The only one that is printed needs to be Written-by Bruce Moreland. Delete the composed by. The second credit isn't documented on the release. Delete it. Uncredited is an option, but honestly it is far more complicated and difficult to include a one of those. Just avoid them.
3. Release notes - I'd delete that completely. Release notes are for factual things that are about the release itself. What you wrote is borderline. It could be in the submission notes, but you need to include a direct link to the exact site, not a vague comment about the band's site. It's up to you to provide the details, not count on somebody searching for it. URL's are only allowed in the submission notes. The only way that release note can stand is if the exact release page says the release is only available from the site. And then you will have to include the exact to the CD page in the submission notes (not in the Release Notes).
4. Release date - the 2021 date on the release isn't necessarily the release date. You'll need a for the release date. Since you seem to like the bandcamp page - if the release date is published there, use it (that date won't be a year, it will be very specific), and include the link to the exact CD page (NOT the general band page). Otherwise delete the release year.
5. Format - there is a potential problem. The picture looks like a CDr, not a pressed CD. The face of the CD looks like a printable CDr. Only you can say if it is a CDr - looking at the flip side of the CD, if it isn't silver then it's a CDr. Honestly, if is a CDr - you should add a picture of the flip side to confirm that.
Change the format to CDr if that's the case.
Barcodes and Track titles are perfect.
Submission note - keep them brief and a summary of what you did. No need for editorial comments. You need to include a list of what you did by section - Format, Tracklist, LCCN, BaOI, Release Notes, Credits... And include web links if you have to something (like release date).
That should fix up the submission. Hope that helps. The long explanation is just to help you out with future edits and work.
If Opdiner wouldn't mind peeking at this - that would be outstanding. And hang on until we've got Space Heroin Sex Doll fixed properly. -

Well, actually the credits ARE in the CD, I just did not consider checking the hard to read handwritten notes behind the cover art. The disk is a CD, it's an independent release, by an artist who comes from the punk movement, he wants his music to look as UN-fancy as possible.
Am I to the photos myself? Am I even allowed to? Regardless, I updated the folder link. Included are credits and proof that I am not lying.
Also, I find the mandated of photos proving the credits are real, to be unnecessarily strict. Sure, it is useful. But what is stopping another to supply photos later? -

As they would say in Minnesota - and so?
Thank you for adding the credit picture.
You actually have a pretty major mistake now. One that a lot of people do early on, not being familiar with how things are done in Discogs. You need to add an ANV to the composed by credit.
The credits should now read:
Written-by, Bruce Moreland
Composed by, name = Bruce Moreland, ANV = Bruce "Ravens" Moreland
Drums, Linda LeSabre
To do the above - add Written-by credit. Edit the composed by credit, and click on the "Add ANV" box, and type in Bruce's name exactly as written on the credit sheet. Leave Drums alone. -

Have you read what was posted above?
https://.discogs.cinepelis.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007185634-How-Can-I-Get-Removed-From-The-CIP-
Please take 10 minutes and read it carefully.
Everything I wrote follows that guidance. And is meant to help you understand how to get out of the CIP program. Especially to make better contributions in the future.
Sorry, my mistake was "read the credits easily". What I meant was - typically CD inserts are done in really small type. We need a picture where the text can be read, not be blurry. If the original text wasn't clear, well that's on the artist. What you eventually included was perfectly legible.
Think about it this way - people are trying to help you get this submission correct (it has mistakes in it). I don't own the CD. I'm guessing others don't own it either. How can we what you entered is correct?
Your ultimate goal is to get somebody to vote that what you did is correct. Unless they can what you entered, nobody can vote on what you did. -

Ravens Moreland - Space Heroin Sex Doll. If I understand the CIP rules correctly, you can only edit releases that are pending to you. Because the release has been edited by somebody else, it is no longer pending to you.
Please do not get upset if you can't edit the release. There is a way to get you back on track and out of CIP.
I've invested a lot of time (actually hours at this point) in getting you this far - please stick with me on this. I'll get you to the finish line, you'll just have to do a little more work on your end for the next release. -

Well, what is it that I can do? I provided the photos, anyone can add them now, the link is right there.
Also, what is the point in separating "written by" and "composed by"? Those are the exact same thing, a synonym. -

Please get this straight - you've repeated this several times. Only images taken by the individual that possess the release can post those images. So NOBODY but you can post your images to the database. When you are off CIP, you can go and add those images. Is that clear now?
Now you have to decide which release you want to work on. Which recording you have in hand that you can take a full set of pictures of. And please this time, prove that you understand where we are going - take the necessary pictures so the release can be verified completely.
Go to your list of Pending - and choose any release. Come back with a link to a set of images that can be used to that release. And a link to the release you've chosen. -

Also, what is the point in separating "written by" and "composed by"? Those are the exact same thing, a synonym.
The fundamental base of Discogs is to capture facts / data / information as printed on the release. If you go back and look at the release in question, you will see printed on the CD, the words "written by". So there is the specific answer to that specific question. It has to be done that way to reflect what is printed on the release.
Written-by tends to be the credit used most here. Composed by is an option. Lyrics by is another. That's if a name is printed on a release with no leading - written by, composed by, or lyrics by.
And honestly, written-by, composed by, and lyrics by are three different things. They are not synonyms. -

Hello, I need some help with some pending submissions. Discogs says I cannot have more than three pending submissions because I am currently on the Contributor Improvement Program (CIP). I have 26 releases that need voting on. If anyone could please help, it would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

I have just been included in the Contributor's Improvement Program. I had been contributing for the past 4 years and had reached around 170 contributions. So fare there still 155 pending since. If I had made changes on my submissions, it is because there were information that came up about it, hence the changes and not to hype the record. I have the record with me physically which means I know what I see. I do appreciate inputs from knowledgeable people in the community to correct me if I made an error. And I learned from them as well.
Anyways, to Discogs management, I do not mind being subjected to CIP. But under CIP, I cannot make additions to the database. But isn't Discogs created in a way that it may become one day a good and reliable source of music information? Limiting one to contribute, sort of, defeats that purpose. Putting a contribution under "pending" is already a good enough process of creating a correct one. Not driving away new information from coming in. A single release sometimes have multiple variations. Be it in the format or descriptions.
Discogs, I may be an amateur contributor but how can I learn if you limit me from learning. I do not think that I am that bad a contributor as well. I only inputted what I saw from the release that I have and the information I gathered about it. Remove me from the CIP and let me contribute.
Thank you
