Notes
Cei Ce Ne-au Dat Nume (Those Who Gave Us a Name) is the first full length album of the most successful Romanian (rock) band, Phoenix.
It was supposed to be the first double LP of a Romanian band, almost half of the material was banned by the communist censorship; even the title track was removed. Only the artwork (see the gatefold cover) was released as planned.
After Nicolae Ceausescu (the communist dictator of Romania, until the December events from 1989) visited China and North Korea in 1971, he became obsessed to impose a strict nationalist ideology, established Stalinist totalitarianism and a return to socialist realism. This was a big shock in the cultural life, especially for the musicians, because Western decadent music as rock and jazz was seen as a bad influence by the communist leaders. This album was the band's counter-response, a rock music show based on ancient Romanian folk music, with pre-Christian influences.
The initial tracklist was the following (around 51-52 minutes):
1 - A Oilor - (traditional, adapted by Nicolae Covaci)
2 - Bocet la mamă - (traditional, adapted by Nicolae Covaci/Josef Kappl, lyrics by Victor Cârcu)
3 - Jocul timpului - (composed by Nicolae Covaci, additional text by Victor Cârcu, recited by Diogene V. (Lelu) Bihoi)
" Rămasă-n lumea ei, durerea
A zămislit găuri adînci,
4 - Primăvara - Introducere (traditional, adapted by Josef Kappl)
5 - Cocoșii Negri - first main theme of the show (traditional, adapted by Nicolae Covaci/Josef Kappl)
6 - Freamăt - instrumental (composed by Josef Kappl)
7 - Vișina - part 1 (Sînt trei sate lăudate) (composed by Nicolae Covaci, traditional lyrics)
"„Sunt trei sate lăudate
În visterie nebăgate
Nu dă birul la domnie
De-mpărat nu vrea să știe”
8 - Năluca - (music by Nicolae Covaci, lyrics by Al. Macedonski). The song has an additional verse, not part of the original poem: "Veni-va o noua zi!" - "A new day will come!"
9 - Vișina - part 2 (Răzmeriță apoi revoltă) (composed by Nicolae Covaci, traditional lyrics)
10 - Revolta - instrumental (composed by Josef Kappl)
11 - Recviem pentru eroii căzuti (Recitative part over the main theme, lyrics by M. Sadoveanu, recited by all band )
"Cînd răsare soarele
Avem să ne aducem aminte de ei.
Și de-asemeni avem să-i jelim cînd soarele-asfințește.
Iar cînd ne vom trezi la bătaia miezului nopții,
Avem să-i simțim în jurul nostru
Și ne vom afla nemîngîiați de pierderea lor."
12 - Cei Ce Ne-au Dat Nume - (second main theme of the show) (traditional, adapted by N. Covaci, J. Kappl – V. Cârcu)
"Voi, dar, care aveți inima bună
S-adunăm tot ce în lume-i tînăr
Să cîntăm ce inima ne spune
Neuitînd pe cei ce ne-au dat nume"
13 - Păpăruga I - (traditional, adapted by N. Covaci, J. Kappl)
14 - Păpăruga II - (traditional, adapted by N. Covaci, J. Kappl)
15 - Primăvara - Introducere (traditional, adapted by J. Kappl)
16 - Vara - (music by Nicolae Covaci, lyrics by Victor Cârcu)
17 - Toamna - (music by Nicolae Covaci, lyrics by Victor Cârcu, George Topîrceanu)
18 - Siminică-Duminică - (colind de fată) (traditional, adapted by N. Covaci, J. Kappl)
19 - Iarna - Introducere (traditional, adapted by N. Covaci, J. Kappl – lyrics by V. Cârcu)
20 - Jocul Caprelor - (traditional, adapted by Nicolae Covaci)
21 - Nunta - (music by Nicolae Covaci, lyrics by Victor Cârcu)
22 - Cei Ce Ne-au Dat Nume - (third main theme of the show) (adapted by N. Covaci, J.Kappl - V. Cârcu)
Unfortunately, some of the censored songs are lost, but for some others there are unpublished radio or live recordings.
Năluca is a different song, compare to Năluca from Phoenix (23) - Vino, Țepeș!, but the lyrics are the same.

If you want to get the best sounding pressing, then get the 1-A 2-A cut regardless of labels and covers.
If you are after the first pressing, then get the 1-A 2-A cut with 33 triangle label and simple blue cover.
The simple blue cover was followed but the red gatefold and orange simple cover. -

Vinyl quality is dissapointing (not bad, but I expected good from a record made in 2014).
Sound quality is ok on my setup (compared Negru Voda and Nunta with themselves from a compilation made by Electrecord called " Phoenix" and they sound pretty similar). -

Leo Gherasim made the artwork for the later CD version. The original artwork was made by Valeriu Șepi(the percussionist), mistakenly credited as "Alexandru Andrieș".
