Edited one year agoMusically, an 8 out of 10.
Sonically: yikes. This was recorded in the very early days of digital, and the production demonstrates that. It is antithetical in of sonics to what a jazz album with these musicians should sound like. Dave Rubinson was the wrong person to produce this album.
That being said, an original press is liable to give you what this album was trying to convey, sonically. It lacks dimension in places, and Tony’s drums sound boxed in.
I hope this release is revisited for a worthy remaster at some point. Carlos demonstrated a lot of courage and confidence gathering these people together on this project. -
Absolutely nothing elevator about this album. IF you REALLY know Carlos he is ionate about jazz as much as latin and rock music. With a cast of guests like Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock and a list of sheer royalty within the jazz biome this is a FUSION album not the standard "Santana" fare. The music is lively, intense, comionate and one can hear Carlos was trying to move beyond the doldrums of lyric based formulaic music. MB-Daniel do us true music aficionados a huge favor and please do not critique stuff you seem to know very little about.

There are Santana albums and there are Santana albums. This is one of those that is just, well something you park on the shelf and occasionally bring it out play and say "yes, best leave that on the shelf". Yes the musicianship is fantastic it has those Santana undertones, its just too nice, to perfect, know what I mean. Best left playing in elevators and hotel lobbies
